All You Need to Know About the Paramus Shredding Event

The Borough of Paramus is a small city in Bergen County in New Jersey. It was officially incorporated in the State of New Jersey in 1922 and proudly continues to embrace its Native American heritage, as is evident by the city’s name. In Lenape (the language of the early native American tribes), the word “peramsepuss” means Land of the Wild Turkeys.

History and Transformation of Paramus

In the early days, Paramus was a farming village where turkeys roamed wild and free. In the 1600s, when the first European settlers started to purchase land in Paramus, the rural community slowly evolved. Interstate and international traveling led to the construction of schools, churches, and factories in Paramus.

But it was not until 1931 that Paramus realized the potential of commercialization and turned the small Borough into a fully functional shopping “mecca.” Today, Paramus is revered as one of America’s greatest shopping destinations and boasts the iconic Bergen town center and Westfield Garden State Plaza.

Even though the small city with a population of 26,503 has come a long way and transformed beautifully from a rural farming land into a quintessential suburb, the residents take great pride in their humble beginnings and make deliberate attempts to keep Paramus suburban, safe, friendly, and sustainable. Along with New Jersey’s municipal government, the Mayor, and the Borough Council, residents play an active role in keeping their Borough clean and eco-friendly.

Waste Management Efforts in Paramus

In Paramus, recycling is a community activity. The government of Paramus mandates the safe disposal of household and company waste. The Department of Public Works supervises waste collection and disposal in the Borough. Recycling bins are placed at the curbside around the city, and residents are given strict instructions on recycling their solid waste.

Every year, the Department issues a Recycling Calendar that notifies the residents about the recycling days, hours, and the material that is being accepted. You can access the Recycling Calendar for 2021 here.

Paramus Shredding Event

As proof of its commitment to make Paramus an environmentally-friendly and sustainable city, the Department of Public Works organizes an annual Paramus Shredding Event, where residents are given the opportunity to shred their old private and confidential documents, electronic waste, expired medications, and even old worn-out rubber tires for free.

The event is held at the Paramus Recycling Center, and residents are notified about the date and time of the event in advance. For example, in 2016, the Paramus Shredding Event was organized twice a year, April 2ndSaturday) and August 21st (Sunday) from 9 am to 2 pm. The residents were informed about it via this brochure.

Even though in 2020, the event had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions in the Borough and Bergen County, the Department of Public Works still performed its duty and conducted a mobile shredding operation in its truck by collecting old tires, paper stacks, electronics, hazardous waste, and expired medications from door-to-door on June 6th, 2020, between the hours of 9 am to 2 pm.

Paramus Shredding Event 2021

This year, the Department of Public Works is determined to organize the annual Paramus Shredding Event while abiding by the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings. Special considerations are being taken to maintain social distancing at the event.

In Paramus, the event is being organized at the Bergen Community College on 400 Paramus Road. The first 1-day event will take place on Sunday, April 25th, from 9 am to 2 pm, and the second one will take place on a Saturday, August 7th, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Bergen County residents are given strict instruction to limit their paper shredding to 4 bags and boxes weighing not more than 10 lbs. each. For tire recycling, only 4 tires are allowed at a time. However, for the collection of old and expired electronic waste and medical waste, no specifications have been given as only a limited number of residents will feel the need to recycle or dispose of electronic and medical waste. Usually, bulk collection of electronic and medical waste is applicable for the companies.
